Student Government
To heighten awareness of and commitment to moral and ethical living, specific activities that model responsible citizenship are part of the school’s ongoing program. Class Constitutions: Each class in K- Grade 6 draws up a class constitution during the first days of school. This document is posted in the classroom and referred to for guidance throughout the year. A copy is also sent home to parents.
Formal Class Meetings: Class meetings (K- Grade 6) are designed to provide a continuous forum for promoting cooperation and mutual support, for planning time and activities, and for solving problems in a democratic way. We use “3 P’s” representing praise, planning, and problem solving.
Advisory Meetings: Specific to the WES Middle School are weekly advisory meetings. Middle School students are assigned an advisor each year. This teacher works closely with the student and the parents to help ensure the student’s success, both academically and socially. Weekly advisory meetings are held with an advisor and all of his or her advisees to address issues.
Student Council: Each homeroom in the Middle School elects 2 representatives to the Student Council for a half-year term. The Student Council meets monthly to discuss topics related to the Middle School, plan dances and other social activities, and coordinate community service opportunities.
“Spirit Week” is an example of an idea that the Student Council suggested and implemented. Middle School students showed their school spirit by participating in a different theme each day for the week leading up to Field Day. Examples of the themes are “Crazy Hat and Hair Day” and “Favorite Sports Team Day.”
