Social Activities

There are many opportunities for social interaction – among WES Middle School students, with Middle School students at other schools, and with WES students in the lower grades.

The Middle School Commons:

The Middle School has its own hub on the WES campus, with all the classrooms flowing into a commons.  The commons acts like a crossroads so students can connect throughout the day, as well as play some Foosball.  This area is the main gathering place for breaks, recess, and lunch.

Friday Activity Period:

On Friday afternoons there is an Activity period.  This period is often used for clubs such as card games, charades, Irish dancing, and board games.  It is sometimes used for watching movies that relate to the curriculum.

Community Service Events:

Community service activities such as cleaning up Little Falls Parkway or making holiday cards for senior citizens provide time for the students to talk and eat as they help others.

Movie Evenings:

Several times during the year, Middle School students return to the campus in the evening for a movie and popcorn.

Fall Trips:

The 7th grade takes a 3-day trip to Caroline Furnace in the Shenandoah Mountains and the 8th grade takes a 3-day trip to the Chesapeake Bay.  Both of these trips provide time for fun and social activities such as hiking, canoeing, sitting around a campfire, or playing games.

Middle School Dances:

WES hosts one or two Middle School dances each year to which we invite 5 or 6 other schools.  WES students are also invited to several dances at other schools each year.

Other WES Students:

WES Middle School students interact with students from the lower grades during the three school-wide math events, Field Day, foreign language class breakfasts and lunches, and walking along the Capital Crescent Trail several times a year to attend special chapel services.
