Annual Giving

Annual Giving is the foundation of all fund raising at Washington Episcopal School. WES, like most other independent schools, relies on Annual Giving to keep tuition competitive and enables the talented and dedicated faculty to uphold the Mission of the school by preparing the students to stride confidently into the world, delight in it, and contribute to it. Every gift to Annual Giving directly supports each student's education at WES.

A new WES record for Annual Giving was achieved, raising over $470,000 for the 2015-2016 school year. We are incredibily grateful for our community's generosity and commitment to WES.

We are pleased to announce that Alison and Jonathan Dickey will Co-Chair the 2016-2017 Annual Giving Campaign.

Here are answers to some frequently asked questions.

How are contributions used?

Annual Giving gifts are unrestricted so they can be used where they are needed the most. Every dollar given to Annual Giving is used immediately to maintain excellence, by meeting the school's most important needs and opportunities, including new and ongoing programs in the classroom, financial aid, library and computer resources, athletics, alumni events, and other initiatives.

Why is it important to participate?

A robust Annual Giving Campaign ensures the best possible programs, facility, and faculty for the students.  Annual Giving is the foundation of all fund raising at WES and the level of participation by parents is an important indicator of the loyalty and commitment of those closest to the school.

Do all WES families participate?

Yes!  We celebrated 99-100% parent participation from each class for the past eight years and we hope to continue the tradition!  For the last 14 years, 100% of the faculty has contributed to Annual Giving.

Do you only want large gifts?

Gifts to Annual Giving range from $15 to $30,000.  Large gifts are wonderful, but smaller gifts add up.  Although we ask that each family give as much as possible, a high percentage of parent participation is also critical.  We encourage every family to participate.

Can I make monthly or quarterly payments using my credit card?

Yes.  You can make recurring monthly payments by clicking the "donate now" link on this page or you can contact Claire Henderson in the Development Office at chenderson@w-e-s.org.

What is the 20% Club?

The 20% club is a special recognition for donors who give 20% more than the previous year. Since expenses go up every year, the 20% gift increase helps cover these increased costs and enables WES to add even more program enrichments.

Should I give a larger gift if I have more than one child at WES? Aren't my tuition payments enough?

There is a funding gap of approximately $4,500 between tuition and expenses for each child enrolled in WES.  If your second child were not at WES, his/her place would be occupied by a child whose parents presumably would make a contribution equal to yours for their one child, providing the financial support needed for each child.

Why not just set tuition high enough to cover expenses?

We have chosen not to do so for three reasons:

  • Higher tuition might keep some parents from enrolling their children. We want to make WES available to as many people as possible, regardless of their socioeconomic status.
  • Each family is asked to give as much to Annual Giving as they are able; those who can give more are encouraged to do so.
  • Contributions to Annual Giving are tax-deductible.

Are there tax benefits available when I give to WES?

Gifts to the WES Annual Giving are tax-deductible to the fullest extent of the law.  Some gifts, such as appreciated securities, have special value to the donor at tax time.

How long do I have to pay my pledge to WES Annual Giving?

We prefer to receive all payments by May 1.  When you make your contribution, you will be sent an official receipt that you may use for your tax deduction calculations in the tax year during that your payment was made.

I would like to keep my donation confidential. Is that possible?

Yes, simply let us know when you fill out the remittance envelope, make your gift online, or notify the Development Office.

"I support WES's Annual Giving because I benefitted from the school's personal and well-rounded approach to education. I have so many memories of all my teachers and how they formed me into the human being that I am today, how WES encouraged me to be intellectually curious and to love learning. Now that I am all grown up, I support WES to help give other children the same experience that I enjoyed."
