Middle School
A Middle School Like No Other
Middle School at Washington Episcopal School is where students truly come into their own—developing confidence, deepening critical thinking skills, and strengthening their sense of self and others. With dedicated teachers, a strong advisory system, and a commitment to both academic rigor and personal growth, WES offers a vibrant learning environment where students are known, challenged, and supported every step of the way.

Welcome to the Middle School Division
Middle school is often seen as a challenging time of change, but we view it as a powerful opportunity. Our program is designed to support students academically, socially, and emotionally—helping them grow into capable, self-aware young adults who are ready to thrive in high school and beyond.
When you meet a WES graduate, you know there’s something different about them. They carry themselves with poise, confidence, humility, and kindness. These traits don’t emerge by accident—they’re cultivated with care during the middle school years.
At the heart of our program are academic classes led by expert teachers providing space for meaningful inquiry and an Advisory program that fosters a strong sense of belonging. In Grade 6, students take a course in executive functioning to build lifelong skills in organization and time management. In Grades 7 and 8, our ethical leadership course helps them explore what it means to lead with empathy and integrity.
Beyond the classroom, students build lasting memories through fall team-building trips and spring study trips to Utah, Italy, Spain, and France. These shared experiences strengthen their sense of independence and expand their worldview.
We also partner closely with families during the high school application process, ensuring each student finds the right fit. WES graduates leave us not just ready for high school—they are prepared to lead, connect, and make an impact.

Connecting the Classroom to the World
Middle School study trips emphasize hands-on experiences that enhance learning, personal growth, and community development. These experiences are closely tied to WES curricula and values, reinforcing classroom learning and fostering strong student bonds.
Starting in sixth grade with a study trip to the Desert Southwest and then overseas tours of Italy, France, or Spain, each journey builds on the last, exponentially enriching our student’s educational journey and preparing them for a globally connected future.
Building Community through Advisory Groups
In the WES Middle School, students in Grades 6-8 are grouped with a consistent set of peers and a faculty advisor for weekly meetings. The advisor, who fosters strong bonds within the group and implements community-focused activities, provides both academic and social-emotional support for each student in the group.
The WES Advisory curriculum includes age-appropriate forums on critical topics such as social justice, digital citizenship, and stress management. Advisory creates a safe environment for social and personal growth while fostering a connected middle school community.
Integrating Ethics Across the Curriculum
In our practical Ethics course, students delve into moral and ethical decision-making, examining how their communities, relationships, and personal experiences shape their values. They explore the real-world impact of their decisions and actions on others through literature, film, and current events.
By Grade 8, the focus shifts to ethical leadership, culminating in a capstone project where students study a prominent figure in world history, deepening their understanding of ethical principles and leadership.
Confidence Through Arts & Athletics
WES Middle School students can choose to compete against other schools in soccer, basketball, cross-country, lacrosse, and track & field, and all students participate in twice yearly band and choral concerts, the musical in Grade 6, and the Grade 8 Shakespeare performance. At every turn, they learn to take risks, to rise, to lead, and to shine.
