Welcome Back

Welcome back! The Stuart Work Library is up and running and ready for business. We added over 100 books to the collection this summer and moved several sections around. We've already had several classes and we've already had 320 books checked out. Please see me if you need any help with research projects or for book suggestions.

Have a great year!

New Books March 2017!

We have new books! You can view the books on this Pinterest page: https://www.pinterest.com/LibraryWES/new-books-march-2017/

Of the new books, I highly recommend Undefeated: Jim Thorpe and the Carlisle Indian School Football Team by Steve Sheinkin. In this book Sheinkin deftly intertwines the story of football with the story of Jim Thorpe and the treatment of Native Americans. It is a fascinating book that is hard to put down. We have two copies but you’ll have to wait in line behind the 7 students who already have it on hold. I also recommend Flying Lessons and Other Stories edited by the co-founder of “We Need Diverse Books”  Ellen Oh and including stories by Kwame Alexander, Matt De la Pena and many others. It is a collection of short stories by a diverse group of authors bringing their much needed perspective to the stories.  I am currently reading Shadows of Sherwood: A Robyn Hoodlum Adventure by Kekla Malone. This modern day retelling of Robin Hood (and I am a sucker for Robin Hood stories) is action packed and fun to read.

Black Eyed Susan and New Books!

We were busy ordering new books for our students over the summer, including the new Harry Potter! You can see what we have added here:https://www.pinterest.com/LibraryWES/new-books-september-2016/.

We are also very excited to be particpating in the Black Eyed Susan Awards this school year. The Black-Eyed Susan Book Award is a children’s choice award for the state of Maryland. Each year since 1992, the Black-Eyed Susan Book Award has been given to authors and/or illustrators of outstanding books chosen for the award by Maryland students. Students may cast one vote for the book they consider to be the most outstanding book in each of the categories. There are five different reading lists: Picture Books, books for students in Grades 4-6, books for students in Grades 6-9, graphic novels for students in Grades 4-6,and graphic novels for students in Grades 6-9. Visit the Black Eyed Susan page on the library web site to learn more and to see the books nominated. Please see Mr. Pane with any questions about the Black Eyed Susans or the new books.

Welcome Back

It's great to be back at WES. Over the summer I took the time to recatalog the entire fiction section. Now the fiction books are sorted by genre instead of by author. I hope this will help students find books that are interesting and that they will want to read. In the past I would be asked "where are the funny books" at least once a day. All I could say was that the funny books were on the shelves but now I can just point them to the Humor section. I can't guarantee they will find the book funny but at least they will know where to look for the funny books.

Please stop by the library and say hi. I love it when people stop by and I am always willing to take the time to discuss books. Have a great year and check back here for more library news.

Book Awards

Yesterday morning was very exciting for the library. We found out that the authors who visited WES during the Book Fair were honored with awards at the American Library Association's Midwinter Meeting. John Lewis and Andrew Aydin's book March: Book 1 won a Coretta Scott King Honor. Brian Floca won the Caldecott Award for his book Locomotive. The Caldecott is awarded annually to "the most distinguised American picture book for children." We are thrilled for Brian Floca, Representative Lewis and Andrew Aydin and we are so happy that the students at WES got to hear from and meet these distinguised authors.
