Science & Innovation

Our science program is designed to develop 21st-century skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, creative thinking, entrepreneurship, and collaboration. Students learn key knowledge and skills across various topics, honing their ability to ask higher-level questions and investigate complex ideas.

Our program provides consistent opportunities and instruction to connect in-class learning with real-world applications. This approach teaches students to apply the scientific method to everyday life, becoming creative and innovative problem solvers. Additionally, they understand the global environment and their role as global citizens while becoming critical and conscientious digital citizens.

Early Childhood

Our Early Childhood Science program is a hands-on adventure where our younger dragons get to explore and discover the world around them! Students learn basic scientific concepts through engaging experiments and activities based around a set of themes.

  • Health and the Human Body sessions cover nutrition, hygiene, exercise, and the five senses
  • Simple Machines and Engineering introduce kids to levers, pulleys, and more.
  • Our Environmental Stewardship theme teaches the importance of recycling and conserving resources.

With every theme, our program fosters curiosity and a love for learning in a fun and interactive way.

Elementary

Our elementary science program at WES immerses students in Science, Technology, and Innovation. We provide a solid foundation using the Next Generation Science Standards, life sciences, chemistry, and physics. Students engage with technologies like Sphero SPRK and LEGO WeDo, explore the Engineering Design Process, and apply what they have learned through projects in the Dragon Innovation Lab.

Science classes take full advantage of WES being located in a hub of science in this area. Guest speakers and study trips to Washington, DC, museums and other institutions enrich the experience. Our hands-on approach ensures students grasp the importance of STEM, entrepreneurship, and innovation while having fun.

Middle School

Our Middle School Science program builds on the hands-on learning approach established in early childhood with a curriculum that covers biology, chemistry, engineering, geology, and physics.

  • In Grade 6, students develop scientific reasoning skills using the 2019 Smithsonian Science for the Classroom (SSftC) Science Curriculum, undertake independent science fair projects, and explore geology on a study trip to the Desert Southwest.
  • Grade 7 shifts focus on life science, covering evolution, ecology, and genetics. They also include extensive lab work and a practical exam.
  • In Grade 8, students dive into Physical Science, exploring concepts in physics and chemistry like motion, energy, atomic structure, and chemical reactions, with a strong emphasis on laboratory work and quantitative data analysis.

Middle School science students are well-prepared for high school science — working in the lab, engaging with textbooks, honing their understanding of the scientific method, and developing a passion for connecting science to the world around them.
