Courtney ClarkDEI Director & Elementary Art Teacher
At WES Since: 2018
What is your philosophy on teaching?
My philosophy is character first. I believe it is important that I take the time to help students build their character within the space they are in—guide them to understand their potential and identify their level of success; after that, the learning of everything else easily falls in place.
What excites you about teaching Art?
What I love about teaching art is watching my students find the artist within themselves. I believe that everyone has the ability to create; seeing the joy on a student’s face when they find that just right medium is what makes teaching art so exciting!
I have been teaching art since 2002, and I also have served many years in various school leadership roles. I earned my bachelor’s degree from Grinnell College in Iowa and my Master of Science Administration in nonprofit management from Trinity Washington University. I coordinate the Faculty and Parent Diversity Committees, and help us maintain a focus on recruiting, hiring, mentoring, and retaining faculty and professional staff who reflect and support a diverse and inclusive school community. I also work closely with Dr. Dibinga, our DEI facilitator, to collaborate with the administrative team and faculty in our efforts to ensure our curriculum reflects multiple perspectives as well as content centered on respecting and embracing differences and acting against bias and injustice.
