Elementary Division Director

At WES Since: 2018

What is your philosophy on teaching?
My philosophy is character first. I believe it is important that I take the time to help students build their character within the space they are in—guide them to understand their potential and identify their level of success; after that, the learning of everything else easily falls into place.

Bio:
I joined WES in 2018. I previously served as the elementary art teacher and the Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. I worked in DC Public Schools for two years, then in two different DC Public Charter Schools over thirteen years. During my time in DC, in addition to teaching art to elementary and middle school students, I served on the Instructional Leadership Team, in numerous leadership roles including the Specials Department Chair—working with my team to align classes, programs, and curriculum across multiple schools. I also spent many years as an Extended Day Program Coordinator, managing staff and developing after-school programs for students. I earned a bachelor’s degree in art from Grinnell College in Iowa and a Master of Science Administration in nonprofit management from Trinity Washington University. Outside of school, I enjoy all things art—including sewing and making my own garments. I live in Maryland with my husband, and two children—also WES Dragons!
