What excites you about teaching music?
I love music and have always loved music. It’s been a big part of my life since I was a child. I grew up singing, playing the piano, and always wanted it to be a part of my life. As much as I love performing and making music, I also fell in love with guiding children on their own musical journey. When I was in college learning how to teach music, I was so excited by how much the students learned, how creative they could be, and how joyful music class could be. I feel really lucky that I get to do something I love as my job!
What is the best book you have ever read?
My favorite book is The Secret History by Donna Tartt. A close second is Fates and Furies by Lauren Groff.
I have been teaching music for the last 18 years in the United States and abroad. Most recently, I was at Dulwich College Shanghai Puxi in Shanghai, China, where I served as head of primary music. Previously, I worked at Colorado Academy and in the Lincoln Public Schools in Nebraska. My work with students centers around fostering curiosity, integrated musicianship skills, and creativity through music. I prioritize creating safe spaces for exploration and discovery through joyful, active music making. I received my bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music education from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, and am a certified Orff-Schulwerk teacher educator. I love to sing and have been a member of chamber and community choral groups in Denver, Colorado, as well as in Shanghai. Outside of school life, I love reading, knitting, and visiting new places.
